Amb. Johnnie Carson

Amb. Johnnie Carson currently serves as a Senior Advisor at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). He assumed that positon in June 2013, after serving as Assistant Secretary for African Affairs at the State Department from 2009 to 2013.

Amb. Carson's 37-year Foreign Service career included ambassadorships to Kenya (1999-2003), Zimbabwe (1995-1997), and Uganda (1991-1994); and service as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of African Affairs. Earlier in his career he had assignments in Portugal, Botswana, Mozambique, and Nigeria. He also served as Staff Director for the Africa Subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives. Before joining the Foreign Service, he was a Peace Corps volunteer in Tanzania.

Amb. Carson is the recipient of numerous State Department awards. His published material has appeared in the Boston Globe, the New York Times, and Time, and online at CCN, the Royal Africa Society/African Arguments, and AllAfrica.com.

Amb. Carson holds a B.A. in History and Political Science from Drake University and an M.A. in International Relations from the School of Oriental and Africa Studies at the University of London.
