Modern Marimba

Modern Marimba, founded by Tihda Vongkoth and Steph Davis, has celebrated three seasons of virtual and in-person concert programs that celebrate the true diversity of music while sustaining equitable partnerships and respecting its local community. Along with a celebration and appreciation of music, Modern Marimba works to maintain safe performance spaces, curates discussions about the intersectionality of music and social justice work, and acknowledges the limitations of its mission within the nonprofit industrial complex.

Tihda Vongkoth has performed as a guest orchestral percussionist with the Sarasota Orchestra, The Florida Orchestra, Naples Philharmonic, Opera Tampa, St. Pete Opera, and Jacksonville Symphony. Tihda is committed to music education as a tool for healing and liberation. She hopes to cultivate a sense of curiosity, literacy in multiple musical languages, and a lifelong respect for the music community.

Described as a 'œcaptivating storyteller" and "sensitive" player, Steph Davis is a Boston based artist and marimbist obsessed with ancestry, critical consciousness, and self-actualization. Their work is created through a spiritual process of resting, feeling, thinking, reflecting, and reading. Through performance, Steph shares generations of Black stories, as well as their own thoughts about race, gender, and society.
