Woodruff, JudySenior Correspondent and the Former Anchor and Managing Editor of the PBS News HourJudy Woodruff is an icon of news broadcasting, having spent
more than five decades covering politics and other news, at PBS,
NBC, and CNN. As the former anchor and managing editor of the
PBS News Hour, she is instantly recognizable and respected as
the gold standard of reporting.She spent more than a decade as the chief Washington
correspondent for The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, and also
anchored the PBS award-winning documentary series, Frontline
with Judy Woodruff.In 2013, she and the late Gwen Ifill were named the first two
women to co-anchor a national news broadcast. She continued as
sole anchor after Ifill’s death in 2016.Her work has addressed a gamut of issues, from documentaries
on political figures to incisive investigations of cultural and
generational issues. Among these productions were such
disparate subjects as Generation Next: Speak Up. Be Heard, an
extensive project on the views of young Americans, and Nancy
Reagan: The Role of a Lifetime, a documentary about the former
First Lady.She has been a visiting professor at Duke University as well as a
visiting fellow at Harvard University. Woodruff is a founding co-
chair of the International Women’s Media Foundation, an
organization dedicated to promoting and encouraging women in
the journalism and communication industries worldwide.She also serves on numerous boards of trustee. Judy is a graduate of
Duke University, where she is a trustee emerita.
She is the recent recipient of numerous awards, including an
Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as the Poynter Medal
for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism, the Gwen Ifill Press
Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists and
the Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism from Arizona
State University.Her recent work, America at a Crossroads, is a major ongoing
PBS NewsHour project led by Judy Woodruff, as well as a
separate podcast series launched in 2022, both examining
political polarization, democracy, and American identity.
