About Speaker

Dr. Jaime Palter had long admired her father’s engineering insights and her mother’s gift for inspiring her second-graders. She channeled that admiration into understanding how the ocean works—and she's never stopped. Across 25 years, studying ocean circulation, she has led expeditions aboard research vessels, deployed robotic platforms into the Gulf Stream in massive storms, and published research on the influence of ocean dynamics on the Earth's climate.

Today, she brings that same passion for discovery to her students and other audiences, sharing insights about the future of ocean circulation and what it might mean for society. She earned her PhD at Duke University, and has done oceanographic research and teaching in Costa Rica, Spain, and Canada.

She is currently a professor at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography. Her work has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, producing research that has shed light on the ocean's role in our climate system.
