The Garbage-Men is a band from Sarasota, Florida who have been sharing sustainability and creativity with the local community playing music on their unique DIY recycled instruments! The group was founded in 2010 at Pine View School in Osprey when Jack Berry wanted to make himself a guitar after hearing his dad sing Beatles songs around the house. He had no woodworking tools or traditional luthier materials experience, so he improvised and used what was lying around the house and in the trash. He brought his first homemade Frosted Mini Wheats guitar to his middle school to show his teachers and friends. Inspired by the enthusiasm and sustainability projects of their environmental science teacher, Mr. Yotsuda, they had the idea to make a full band out of trash. Many classmates were interested in joining so they had to create a rule that in order to join our band you have to make your own instrument out of trash. Harrison was next to join, with his background as first trombone in the middle school band he was eager to experiment and build winds and horns from unconventional repurposed materials. They've performed on CNN, in Times Square, America's Got Talent, and their PBS special with Jack Perkins won an Emmy. Recently they've been putting the finishing touches on their brand new original musical "Stop Making Trash!" which is a collection of songs composed around the theme of recycling and creative sustainability. The current lineup consists of Wesley Backer: 7-Piece Trash Can Drums, Baking Sheet Gong; Jack Berry: 1-String Lucky Charms Lead Guitar, Fax Machine Handset Vocal Microphone; Trent Berry: 1-String Frosted Flakes Bass Guitar; Harrison Paparatto: Hula Horn, Fisher Price Corn Popper Toy Saxophone; Jamie Tremps: Glass Bottle Marimba, Walker Whistle, Rotary Dial Telephone Vocal Microphone; and Jamieson Martel: Tin Can Timbales, A/C Vent Washboard, Bottle Cap Tambourine, Spoons, Vocals.
