Amb. Martha Bárcena Coqui is a Mexican diplomat who is a Senior Adviser in the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and served as the first female Ambassador to the United States from Mexico (December 2018 until February 2021). She also served as an ambassador to Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Denmark, Norway and Iceland.

During the first Trump administration she was a key player in renegotiating the terms of the U.S./Mexico/Canada Agreement, the successor of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Amb. Coqui earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the Universidad Iberoamericana as well as a master’s degree from the Diplomatic School of Spain.
