Dr. Elizabeth Economy is the Hargrove Senior Fellow and Co-Director of the US, China, and the World Program at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. From 2021-2023, Economy served as the Senior Advisor for China to the Secretary of Commerce.
Economy is an acclaimed expert on Chinese domestic and foreign policy and U.S.-China relations. An award-winning author, her most recent book is The World According to China (Polity 2021). She is also the author of The Third Revolution: Xi Jinping and the New Chinese State (Oxford 2018), By All Means Necessary: How China’s Resource Quest is Changing the World (with Michael Levi) (Oxford 2014) and the River Runs Black: The Environmental Challenge to China’s Future (Cornell, 2004, 2nd edition 2010).
Economy has published opinion pieces in the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and New York Times and appears frequently on nationally broadcast television programs, including Fareed Zakaria GPS, PBS NewsHour, and Bloomberg’s Wall Street Week. She serves on the boards of Swarthmore College, the National Endowment for Democracy, and the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and is a member of the Aspen Strategy Group and Council on Foreign Relations. She also serves as the East Asia Book Reviewer for Foreign Affairs.
